(1927–1937)Purges and Repression in the Soviets (1927–1937)

During the agrarian revolution, the CCP's "purge of counterrevolutionaries" in the Central Soviet devoured its own Red Army. After the Futian Incident, the purge metastasized; masses of commanders and cadres were wrongly killed — the Party's first great internal purge.

目录Contents

Background: where "AB League" came from

The "AB League" (Anti-Bolshevik League) was originally a 1920s KMT-rightist anti-communist outfit in Jiangxi, essentially defunct after 1927. But in 1930 Li Lisan's "left" line demanded purging "AB Leagues" inside the Red Army — turning dissenters into "AB elements" by fiat.

In February–March 1930 Mao ran an "AB League purge" in the Fourth Red Army, then spread it across the Central Soviet. "AB League" became a catch-all accusation anyone could face.

Who decided

Mao Zedong — the supreme decision-maker of the "Anti-AB Corps" purge in the Central Soviet Area (1930–1931).

Detailed timeline

February–March 1930: The Fourth Red Army's "AB purge" killed hundreds.

October 1930: The First Front Army's general front committee ordered a "thorough purge of AB Leagues" army-wide.

December 1930: The Futian Incident erupted (below).

January–April 1931: The purge metastasized. Masses of Twentieth Army cadres killed; southwest-Jiangxi leaders Li Wenlin, Duan Liangbi and others wrongly executed.

November 1931: The Chinese Soviet Republic was founded; purges continued.

1932–1934: Purges tapered, but new labels ("Social Democratic Party") emerged. They essentially ended before the 1934 Long March.

Eyuwan Soviet: Zhang Guotao's 1931–1932 purge killed senior commanders Xu Jishen, Zhou Weijiong and others; the Baiqueyuan massacre killed 2,000+ at once.

The Futian Incident

December 12, 1930: Elements of the Twentieth Red Army mutinied at Futian, Jiangxi, detaining Soviet bureau delegates and demanding release of wrongly arrested comrades and an end to purges — the Red Army's first internal mutiny.

Mao Zedong and Zhu De sent troops to suppress it. In 1931 the Twentieth Army's designation was abolished; masses of its men were killed. After Futian, purges intensified — "AB League" hats flew everywhere.

Futian's nature is long disputed: officially a "counterrevolutionary rebellion," but recent research widely sees it as forced resistance; its leaders had no "AB" problem.

Who executed

Execution chain: Mao (General Front Committee secretary) → the General Front Committee → purge committees at all levels → Red Army political-security organs → grassroots execution.

Who opposed

1. The Futian mutineers:

2. The wrongly killed "AB Corps members": large numbers of local cadres and Red Army officers labeled "AB Corps" were later shown to be wrongful cases. The Center partially rehabilitated the Futian Incident during the 1940s Yan'an Rectification, but the "Anti-AB Corps" campaign itself was never fully repudiated.

3. The silent majority: under the logic of "better to kill three thousand wrongly than let one escape," questioning the purge meant being labeled an "AB Corps" sympathizer. The silence is recorded as such.

影响Impact

The Red Army bled white. Purges killed masses of experienced commanders, weakening combat power — indirectly causing the fifth encirclement campaign's failure and the forced Long March.

The internal-purge template. The Soviet purges pioneered "expanded inner-Party struggle," a logic reused in Yan'an's "Rescue" campaign and every post-1949 political movement.

Evaded reckoning. Officially still "excessive scope," not fundamental error; Futian remains unrehabilitated.

Where the machinery came from: from the Cheka to the Political Security Bureau

The Soviet-area purges were not improvised. Their organizational template came from the Soviet Union. In December 1917 Lenin's government created the Cheka, the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission, with Red Terror as declared policy. In the early 1930s the Chinese Soviet areas copied the model, establishing political security bureaus at every level of government, combining investigation, arrest, judgment and recommendations for execution in a single organ outside ordinary Soviet judicial procedure. After the Chinese Soviet Republic was proclaimed in November 1931, a State Political Security Bureau sat within the provisional central government, with branch and county bureaus below it. The purge chain of command was therefore institutional: the security organs could arrest first, assign the label afterwards, and let a purge committee or tribunal complete the form. Its deepest difference from ordinary criminal justice lay in its logic of proof. The organization — AB League, Social Democratic Party, reformist clique — was presumed to exist first; interrogation then filled the membership list with names, and confessions that corroborated one another counted as evidence complete.

The interrogation methods are recorded concretely in memoirs and in the party's own later review materials: binding and suspension beatings, the tiger bench, chili water forced into the nostrils, branding with hot irons, and demands that a prisoner produce a list of accomplices overnight. Prisoners facing torture named names at random to make it stop; the lists snowballed; and interrogators treated the number of names extracted as a measure of achievement. When the Central Delegation carried new instructions into the Soviet area in 1931, Ren Bishi and his colleagues criticized “extremely grave errors” in the purge work, in language that acknowledged the institutionalization of torture. In the 1940s, when the Central Committee issued conclusions on the Futian Incident and related cases, it admitted that the method of extorting confessions and believing them had been used and that the error of over-expansion had been committed. These are the party's own formulations in its own documents, quoted here without embellishment.

The interaction between purge and war must also be recorded. Through 1930 and 1931 the Nationalists mounted their First and Second Encirclement Campaigns against the Central Soviet Area, and the Soviet lived under extreme military pressure. The purge's sponsors used that pressure as a reason to compress all procedure — arrests at night, interrogation on the spot, execution within days — on the argument that where encirclement tightened, hidden enemies multiplied. The victory over the First Encirclement at the turn of 1931 did not relax the purge; it crested in the spring and summer of 1931 instead. Only in April 1931, when the Central Delegation of Ren Bishi, Wang Jiaxiang and Gu Zuolin reached the Soviet area, denied that a large-scale AB League organization existed in southwestern Jiangxi, and ordered the indiscriminate arrests and killings stopped, was that wave pressed down. Pressed down is not the same as accounted for. No sponsor of the purge was disciplined for it. Rehabilitation of the wrongly killed came piecemeal in the late 1930s and 1940s, mostly as internal organizational conclusions whose details were not shared with the families.

Soviet by soviet: Eyuwan, Hunan-Hubei-West, western Fujian, Hunan-Jiangxi

The Eyuwan Soviet. In May 1931 Zhang Guotao was sent by the Centre to take charge of the Eyuwan Soviet on the Hubei-Henan-Anhui border. From September to November he ran a major purge in the names of the “Reorganization Clique,” the “Third Party” and the “AB League.” Xu Jishen, commander of the Fourth Red Army, its political commissar Pang Yongjun, and Zhou Weijiong, commander of the Twelfth Division, were all arrested; Xu and Zhou were killed at Baiqueyuan in Guangshan, Henan, at the end of 1931. The wife of Xu Xiangqian, Cheng Xunxuan, was arrested and killed at Baiqueyuan as well. Xu Xiangqian himself kept silent about it for decades, and his memoirs, written in old age, treat his wife's death in a few restrained sentences. The figure of around 2,000 officers and men executed at Baiqueyuan alone, carried in this page's table, follows the Fourth Front Army's war history and local party histories. Estimates for the Eyuwan purge as a whole run most commonly between 6,000 and 10,000 killed; no archival census exists, and the figure is marked unverified. In October 1932 the Fourth Front Army's main force was driven out of Eyuwan on its westward march, and the purge's destruction of its own command strength is listed in multiple military histories among the causes of the defeat.

The Hunan-Hubei-West Soviet. In the Soviet built by He Long and Zhou Yiqun around Honghu Lake, the purges were directed by Xia Xi, who arrived in 1931 and conducted three successive purge waves between 1932 and 1934 under the label of the “Reorganization Clique.” Large numbers of Third Red Army cadres were killed. Duan Dechang, commander of the Sixth Red Army, was executed at Jinguoping in Badong, Hubei, in May 1933. Several of He Long's own relatives died in the purges and the fighting of those years. Party-history accounts give the Hunan-Hubei-West toll as “several thousand”; some research estimates reach ten thousand. The two figures are set side by side here because the gap between them is itself information. Xia Xi halted the purge in 1934 and died in 1936, drowned during the Long March in Guizhou. In the 1980s Duan Dechang was publicly honoured as a martyr and his family issued one of the earliest-numbered martyr certificates of the reform era, but discussion of responsibility remained confined to the formula that Xia Xi had carried out an ultra-left line.

Western Fujian and the border soviets. In 1931 the western Fujian Soviet purged in the name of the “Social Democratic Party,” killing large numbers of cadres of the Soviet government and the Twelfth Red Army, in the thousands by the estimates available, unverified. The Hunan-Jiangxi Soviet purged a “Reorganization Clique” in 1932 and 1933, killing provincial and army cadres and at one point placing Wang Shoudao himself under suspicion. The Hunan-Hubei-Jiangxi Soviet ran its own purge in parallel. Read together, the soviets share three features. In every case the crime was an organization presumed to exist before any name was attached to it. In every case the crest came between 1931 and 1933. And in every case the killing was stopped by a delegation or a document from above, never by any corrective mechanism inside the Soviet itself. Those three shared features are why the purges cannot be written off as one region's loss of control. They were a method in general use across the party at that date.

The parallel case: the Soviet Great Terror, 1936–1938

No account of the Chinese Soviet purges is complete without the event upstream of them, the Great Terror in the Soviet Union, because the Chinese security system, its vocabulary of crimes and its interrogation logic were all imported from Moscow, and because the Comintern that directed the terror years was, at that very moment, the Chinese party's superior organization. The assassination of the Leningrad party secretary Kirov on 1 December 1934 supplied the pretext. In August 1936 the first Moscow show trial convicted Zinoviev, Kamenev and fourteen others of running a “Trotskyist-Zinovievite Terrorist Centre”; all sixteen were shot. In January 1937 the second trial dealt with Pyatakov, Radek and fifteen others, thirteen of them shot. In March 1938 the third tried Bukharin, Rykov, Yagoda and eighteen others, eighteen of them shot. The trials shared a single method: the accused confessed in open court to crimes supported by no material evidence, in scripts vetted in advance by the NKVD, and their families were exiled or shot behind them.

The show trials were the shop window. The mass killing ran on paperwork. NKVD Order No. 00447, signed by Yezhov on 30 July 1937, divided “former kulaks, criminals and other anti-Soviet elements” into two categories, the first to be shot and the second to be sent to camps, and assigned quotas in advance to every region: an initial 75,950 in the first category and 193,000 in the second, with regional requests for increases repeatedly approved by Stalin and the Politburo. Parallel “national operations” targeted diaspora peoples; the Polish operation alone arrested some 140,000 people and shot about 111,000 of them. In June 1937 Marshal Tukhachevsky and seven other senior commanders were tried in secret and shot as spies, and over the following two years roughly 35,000 Red Army officers were shot, imprisoned or expelled, the proportions varying with the source. The Gulag camp population through the terror years fluctuated between roughly 1.2 and 2 million, with deaths inside the camps counted separately from executions.

The death toll has to be given in parallel accounts, because the sources do not agree and the disagreement is honest. The declassified NKVD statistical reports, opened after 1991, record about 1.57 million arrests in 1937 and 1938 and 681,692 executions. Most scholars treat that archival figure as a floor: it excludes deaths in camps, in exile and under interrogation. Robert Conquest's estimate in The Great Terror ran higher, at roughly a million executions and a higher total mortality, while revisionist historians such as J. Arch Getty have preferred to work from the archival series itself. The Katyn massacre falls outside the 1936–1938 window but belongs to the same machinery of repression: in the spring of 1940, acting on Beria's proposal and a Politburo decision of 5 March, the NKVD shot 21,857 Polish prisoners of war and detainees at Katyn and other sites, the figure in the documents Russia handed over in the 1990s. From 1940 to 1990 the Soviet government blamed the massacre on Nazi Germany; only in April 1990 did Gorbachev formally acknowledge that the NKVD had done it.

The relationship between the two purges runs in three layers, and all three belong on this page. First, common descent: the Chinese political security bureaus were modelled on the Soviet GPU system, and the logic of the Chinese purge — fix the organization first, fill it with confessions afterwards — is structurally identical to the logic of the Moscow trials. Second, chronology: the Chinese Soviet purges crested between 1930 and 1934, slightly before the Great Terror of 1936 to 1938, so the Chinese purge cannot be described as a copy of the Terror. The accurate formulation is that both grew from one root, the security institutions and enemy doctrine of the Leninist party, and fruited in sequence in the two countries. Third, personnel: Chinese Communists in Moscow were not bystanders. Wang Ming and Kang Sheng worked alongside the Comintern's own purge apparatus in the 1930s, and members of the Chinese delegation were themselves arrested or disappeared in the Terror. Kang Sheng returned to China at the end of 1937 to run the party's security work, and the cadre-screening and “Rescue” campaigns at Yan'an in 1943 replayed the Soviet-area pattern of extorted confession until Mao intervened, halted the campaign and apologized. Drawn in full, that line makes the Chinese Soviet purges something larger than an early mistake. They were the first Chinese run of a transnational system.

Rehabilitation, commemoration and the state of the record today

Rehabilitation came in waves, none of them complete. The first, within a few years of the purges themselves, restored party membership and posts to a minority of survivors still living, while the dead received internal conclusions only. The second came in the 1940s: the Central Committee's 1945 Resolution on Certain Questions in the History of Our Party folded the Soviet purges into the errors of a “left” line, and stopped there, publishing neither names nor numbers. The third came in the 1980s, when local party-history offices compiling organizational histories restored martyr or member status to large numbers of the dead. The names of some Futian and Social Democratic Party victims can be found today in the gazetteers and martyr registers of Jiangxi, Hubei, Anhui and Fujian, and those registers are the main public source from which researchers now assemble lists. The official characterization has never moved beyond “excessive expansion of the purge”: the killing of the wrong people is admitted, the purge system itself is not faulted. The Futian Incident received an internal conclusion in the 1980s that most participants had been driven to resist and should be rehabilitated, but published formulations have wavered since, and this page records the position as partial rehabilitation under a shifting label.

Commemoration today follows the same contour. The revolutionary memorial halls at Ruijin and Jinggangshan display the history of the Soviet period with the purges carried in a panel or two, the weight of the exhibition falling on the encirclement campaigns and the Long March. Martyr cemeteries at Baiqueyuan and Honghu honour chiefly those who died fighting the Nationalists; victims of the purges buried in the same ground are not usually distinguished by cause of death. The Soviet comparison is instructive. Moscow has a Gulag History Museum, opened in 2015, civic projects that read the names of the executed aloud, and an official Wall of Sorrow unveiled in 2017; the Katyn memorial site in Poland is open to the public. The difference in archival openness between the two countries maps directly onto the difference in how completely the dead can be named. For the Chinese Soviet purges no official consolidated list has ever been published. That is why every figure in this page's table is presented in parallel accounts and marked unverified: the numbers are the record, and so is their condition.

Named dead, continued, and the Soviet areas' population loss

The earlier sections of this page named Li Wenlin, Duan Liangbi, Xu Jishen, Zhou Weijiong and Duan Dechang. A few more of the dead can be added from published records, because a purge recorded only in totals invites forgetting. Xie Hanchang, Liu Di and Li Baifang were the principal leaders of the Futian Incident; after leading their troops out and then back, Liu Di and others were executed, while accounts of Xie Hanchang's end differ. Zeng Bingchun, political commissar of the Twentieth Red Army and a veteran of the Jinggangshan days, was killed in the purge of 1931. Jiang Hanbo, secretary of the Southwest Jiangxi Special Committee, was executed as an AB League suspect by the machinery his own committee had helped to run. One name must be entered in order to be excluded: Huang Gonglue, a senior Red Army commander of the period, died in 1931 under Nationalist air attack on the march, not in the purge, though popular online lists of purge victims repeatedly absorb him. He does not belong in this page's count, and the correction is recorded here because accuracy about who was not a purge victim is part of accuracy about who was. In western Fujian the chief of staff of the Twelfth Red Army and leading cadres of the Soviet government died in the Social Democratic Party purge; their names lie scattered through Fujian party-history materials and martyr registers. No published list has ever consolidated the purge dead of the Central Soviet, Eyuwan, Hunan-Hubei-West and western Fujian in one place. That absence is itself part of the record: the obstacle is not researchers' effort but the fact that the underlying rolls have never been opened for consolidation.

Population figures corroborate the combined drain of purge and war from the side. At its height the Central Soviet Area governed a population put by party history at roughly 2.5 to 3 million. By the departure of the main Red Army forces on the Long March in October 1934, that population had fallen sharply through conscription, flight, enemy massacre and the purges; no reliable figure for the decline exists. Xingguo county is the sample most often cited: of a population of about 230,000, more than 80,000 people joined the Red Army or its support services, and the county's verifiable martyr register runs to over 23,000 names, most of them battle dead, with purge victims and men who vanished after recruitment drives mixed inseparably into the same lists. Estimates of Jiangxi province's total population loss across the Land Revolution years, from all causes together, run in the hundreds of thousands in the research literature, with every component figure unverified. This page therefore confines itself to explaining the method and prints no combined provincial total.

The Soviet sequel can be entered for comparison. Yezhov, who directed the Great Terror, was removed as head of the NKVD in 1938 and shot after a secret trial in February 1940; his predecessor Yagoda had preceded him to execution after the third Moscow trial in 1938. The executioner executed was the system's normal ending. In February 1956 Khrushchev's Secret Speech to the Twentieth Congress of the Soviet party gave its first internal accounting of the scale of Stalin's repression, and some victims were rehabilitated in the years that followed, though the speech itself remained officially secret for decades and Soviet rehabilitation never covered all the dead. On the Chinese side, the formulations fixed by the 1945 Resolution on party history have never been substantively revised for the Soviet-area purges, and the 1981 Resolution, which reassessed the party's record, addressed the years after 1949 and left the purges of the soviets outside its scope. The parallel is exact and worth stating without ornament: both parties' self-reckonings stopped at the level of a mistaken line, and stopped before the names and the numbers. This page carries the names as far as published sources allow, and the numbers as far as parallel accounts permit, and goes no further than either.
