(1947–1995)1. Life: From Smuggled Child to Media Tycoon (1947–1995)
Jimmy Lai was born on December 8, 1947, in Guangzhou; his family's fortunes collapsed after 1949. At twelve he was smuggled to Hong Kong hidden in a boat, survived as a child laborer in a glove factory, rose from apprentice to factory manager, and founded the Giordano clothing brand, building it into an Asia-wide retail chain. In later accounts he often said that aboard the smuggling boat, in the factory, and from a Taiwanese businessman, he first encountered the idea of free markets. He became a Hong Kong permanent resident and a British citizen. After Beijing's 1989 crackdown on the student movement, Giordano sold T-shirts printed with protest slogans; his relations with Beijing soured from then on, and he gradually sold his Giordano stake and moved into media: Next Magazine in 1990, and Apple Daily in 1995.
Apple Daily, with its bold headlines, vernacular language and outspoken stance, quickly became one of Hong Kong's best-selling papers. Its editorial line was openly pro-democracy: front-page June Fourth commemorations every year, sustained criticism of the SAR government and Beijing, and support for protesters in the 2014 Umbrella Movement and the 2019 anti-extradition movement. Lai was publisher, columnist, and in his own name a marcher, hunger-striker and vigil attendee; he also openly funded pro-democracy parties — in 2014 the ICAC raided his home over donations to democrats and ultimately brought no charges. In January 2015 masked men threw petrol bombs at his home and at Next Media's headquarters simultaneously. All of this made him, in Beijing's eyes, the democracy camp's 'paymaster and black hand' — and later the raw material for the National Security Law case's 'mastermind' narrative.
2. The National Security Law Arrives and the First Arrests (2020)
On June 30, 2020, the NPC Standing Committee passed the Hong Kong National Security Law and imposed it on the city that night, creating offenses of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces, the last punishable by up to life imprisonment. Lai had already been arrested twice, in February and April 2020, over 2019 marches. At dawn on August 10, 2020, police national-security officers took him from his Ho Man Tin home on suspicion of collusion with foreign forces and other offenses; the same day about 200 officers raided Apple Daily's headquarters and carted away materials — the NSL's first large-scale operation against a media organization, livestreamed across Hong Kong. After he was bailed, the paper's circulation rose rather than fell: the next day's Apple Daily printed 550,000 copies, with citizens queuing overnight to buy them in solidarity.
On December 2, 2020, he was arrested in a fraud case and his bail was revoked; remanded on December 3, he has not left custody since — now more than five continuous years. On December 11 he was additionally charged with conspiracy to collude with foreign forces under the NSL. In late December the High Court briefly granted him bail; the Department of Justice appealed, the Court of Final Appeal ultimately revoked it, and he was returned to custody on the last day of the year. That bail tug-of-war set a precedent: the threshold for bail in NSL cases was fixed at a level close to unattainable. He is held at the maximum-security Stanley Prison, where, per his family and legal team over the years, he has long been kept in solitary confinement with only a very short period of exercise daily — a condition even the sentencing judges mentioned in 2026.
(2021)3. Parallel Cases I: The Unauthorized Assembly Cases (2021)
Before the NSL case ever opened, Lai was sentenced case by case in a string of older prosecutions; each belongs in this record, as together they form the 'stacked cases' picture. Case one: the August 18, 2019 'flowing rally' — on April 1, 2021, West Kowloon Magistrates' Court convicted him of organizing and participating in an unauthorized assembly; on April 16 he was jailed for 12 months. Case two: the October 1, 2019 march — on May 28, 2021, 14 months, part running concurrently with the first. Case three: the June 4, 2020 Victoria Park candlelight vigil, banned that year on pandemic grounds; he attended and lit a candle before leaving, and on December 13, 2021, was convicted of inciting and participating in an unauthorized assembly and jailed for 13 months. Combined, the assembly cases came to roughly 20 months actually served.
All three cases targeted peaceful marches and a vigil themselves; the prosecution alleged no violence by Lai personally. UN human-rights experts and several parliaments noted at the time that prosecuting a media owner serially for assembly offenses had the practical effect of locking the man up first and trying the heaviest case at leisure. That is in fact what happened: from his remand in December 2020 until the NSL trial opened in December 2023 — three full years — his continuous custody rested on these lighter convictions plus the NSL case's no-bail rule. The sequence of the procedures is itself part of this case file.
4. Parallel Cases II: The Fraud Case and Its 2026 Reversal
The fraud case was small in substance: prosecutors alleged that Dico Consultants, a Lai-controlled firm, occupied office space in the Next Media building in breach of a lease clause restricting use to publishing and printing, and that this was concealed from the landlord, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, constituting fraud. On October 25, 2022, the District Court convicted him of two counts of fraud; on December 10, 2022, he was sentenced to five years and nine months, fined HK$2 million, and disqualified from company directorships for eight years. Next Digital executive Wong Wai-keung received 21 months in the same case. The judge said Lai had used his media organization 'as a protective shield' to deceive. It was this case that revoked his bail in December 2020 and began his long remand, and this case whose sentence was later dovetailed with the NSL term.
On February 26, 2026, the Court of Appeal allowed Lai's and Wong's appeals in the fraud case and quashed both men's convictions and sentences. The appellate judges held that the trial judge had erred in law on liability for the alleged concealment: the prosecution had not proved a duty to disclose, still less an intent to defraud. Reuters and AP both reported the 'rare win.' But the reversal changed nothing in practice: seventeen days earlier he had been sentenced to 20 years in the NSL case. Whether prosecutors will take the fraud case to the Court of Final Appeal had no public conclusion at the time of this site's check. This node is recorded because it lays bare the tension inside the case cluster: within one judicial system, a conviction used to trigger years of remand was later held by a higher court to be legally unsustainable.
5. The Death of Apple Daily (May–June 2021)
The disposal of the newspaper proceeded in lockstep with the case against Lai himself. In May 2021 the Secretary for Security froze, under the NSL, Lai's Next Digital shares and bank accounts, and wrote to banks warning them not to deal with his assets. At dawn on June 17, 2021, some 500 national-security police raided the Next Media building and arrested five senior figures, including editor-in-chief Ryan Law and CEO Cheung Kim-hung, on suspicion of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces, citing dozens of Apple Daily articles said to have called for foreign sanctions; HK$18 million in assets of three companies, including Apple Daily Ltd., was frozen. On June 19 Law and Cheung were charged and denied bail. The freeze's direct consequence was that the paper could not pay wages or paper bills: on June 21 the Next Digital board said that unless the freeze lifted, the paper had only days left; on June 23 police arrested lead editorial writer Yeung Ching-kei (pen name Li Ping), and that night the board announced closure.
On June 24, 2021, Apple Daily published its final edition: a print run of one million copies, nearly ten times the usual. From before dawn, queues formed at newsstands across Hong Kong and many sold out by morning; the night before, over a thousand citizens stood in the rain outside the Next Media building with phone torches lit in support of the staff remaining inside, who answered with lights from the roof. The final front page read: 'Hong Kongers bid farewell in the rain: we support Apple.' Website, app and social accounts all closed the same day; a 26-year-old newspaper was processed into non-existence within days. Taiwan's Apple Daily ceased operations in August 2022. Hong Kong has had no mass-circulation pro-democracy daily since; that December, Stand News closed after a similar raid. Apple Daily's end belongs in Lai's personal file because the prosecution's later logic merged the paper's editorial conduct with his personal 'conspiracy.'
(2022–2025)6. The National Security Trial (2022–2025)
The NSL case — formally, conspiracy to collude with foreign or external forces and conspiracy to publish seditious publications — named, besides Lai, six former Apple Daily executives, three companies and two activists (Andy Li and Chan Tsz-wah). The trial was first set for December 2022 but was derailed by the defense's engagement of British King's Counsel Timothy Owen: the Chief Executive sought an interpretation from the NPC Standing Committee, which on December 30, 2022, interpreted Articles 14 and 47 of the NSL to establish that foreign counsel in NSL cases require the Chief Executive's approval. Lai was ultimately unable to be represented by Owen, and the trial was repeatedly postponed.
On December 18, 2023, the trial finally opened at West Kowloon (sitting as the High Court), before three NSL-designated judges — Esther Toh, Susana María D'Almada Remedios and Alex Lee — with no jury. Prosecutors alleged he used Apple Daily and his personal international contacts in a conspiracy to request foreign sanctions and blockades against China and Hong Kong, and published seditious matter through the paper; the evidence included the paper's articles, his interviews, social-media posts and records of meetings with foreign officials, some predating the NSL's entry into force. Of the executives who had pleaded guilty, several, including Cheung Kim-hung, testified for the prosecution. On November 20, 2024, Lai began testifying in his own defense, giving evidence over some 52 days until March 2025. He denied any conspiracy, said he had believed all his life in rule of law and freedom, and called himself a 'political prisoner.' His testimony was the only extended public statement of his five years in custody, reported day by day by international media.
The trial ran to 156 days, far beyond the 80 originally scheduled. In August 2025 the closing-arguments phase was repeatedly delayed by Lai's heart problems — his legal team disclosed diabetes and cardiac issues and significant weight loss — and by weather; the court eventually proceeded with him fitted with a heart monitor. On August 28, 2025, both sides completed closing submissions and the court reserved judgment. Foreign consular officials and international media attended throughout: from its first day this was never only a local criminal case, but the specimen by which the world measures Hong Kong's judiciary — a fact clear to both prosecution and defense.
7. Verdict and the 20-Year Sentence (December 2025–February 2026)
On December 15, 2025, the three judges convicted Lai on both counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and the count of conspiracy to publish seditious publications, in a judgment of more than 800 pages that found him the 'mastermind' of the conspiracies, his intent to seek foreign sanctions spanning the period before and after the NSL took effect. Six executives who had pleaded guilty and the two activists awaited sentence in the same case. In January 2026 the court heard mitigation. On February 9, 2026, the High Court sentenced Lai to 20 years — the heaviest sentence yet under the NSL — with 18 years of it to run consecutively to the fraud term of five years and nine months. The six executives received terms from six years and three months to ten years. What 20 years means for a 78-year-old was put plainly by his daughter Claire that day: it means her father will die in prison. His legal team later confirmed to media that Lai had decided not to appeal the conviction or sentence (reported by Reuters and AP in 2026).
The density of international reaction on sentencing day was rare for a Hong Kong case: UN High Commissioner Türk said the verdict criminalized conduct protected under international law, called for it to be quashed and Lai released, and noted the charges relied extensively on pre-NSL conduct; US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the sentence 'unjust and tragic'; the British Foreign Secretary — Lai is a British citizen — called the prosecution politically motivated, aimed at silencing a critic; the EU, Australia, Japan and Taiwan all issued statements of concern or condemnation; Amnesty International designated him a prisoner of conscience, and Reporters Without Borders said the sentence exposed the collapse of press freedom in Hong Kong. Chief Executive John Lee, in contrast, said the sentence manifested legal justice and that Lai 'got what he deserved.' The two appraisals stand opposed; this site archives both.
8. The Family: Five Years of Prison Visits and Children Campaigning Abroad
Across more than five years inside, Lai's wife Teresa Li and his children have kept visiting — among the few people who see him regularly. Under correctional rules visits are short and conducted through glass by phone; per the family's accounts, he sustains himself in solitary confinement by reading religious books, while his health has visibly declined with age, with diabetes and heart problems. His son Sebastien Lai, based overseas, has spent five years moving between London, Washington and Geneva, meeting legislators and officials and testifying at hearings to press governments to speak for his father; on September 16, 2026, he testified before the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China, urging that Lai's release be raised ahead of Xi Jinping's US visit, and mentioning that his sister Claire was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer — two generations of the family's situation in one testimony (per public reporting of the hearing). After sentencing, Claire said publicly that 20 years for a 78-year-old amounts to a life sentence.
In May 2026, per public reporting, US President Donald Trump raised the release of political prisoners including Lai directly with Xi Jinping during his China visit, and said afterwards that the matter would be 'a tough one.' As of this site's check, there has been no actual progress toward release or reduction. Lai himself said publicly, repeatedly from 2019 on, that he would not leave Hong Kong and would not silence his newspaper to save himself; before his 2020 arrest he told the BBC that if he left, everything he had preached in his life would lose credibility. These statements are fully documented in media records — the footnote to his choice to stay and face trial.
9. Current Status (as of October 2026)
As of October 2026, Jimmy Lai is serving his 20-year NSL sentence at Stanley Prison; the fraud conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal in February 2026, without materially changing his overall position. He has been continuously detained for nearly six years, most of it in solitary confinement, and turns 79 in December 2026. Given his age and health, the 20-year term is in substance a life sentence — a judgment made by the UN human rights office, multiple rights organizations and his family, not this site's inference. Apple Daily has been closed for over five years, its building idle, Next Digital delisted. This site will keep tracking the case — including whether prosecutors appeal the fraud reversal to the Court of Final Appeal, and Lai's health and visitation — and update on verifiable information. 10. The Co-Defendants: The Full Sentencing List of February 9, 2026
On the NSL case's sentencing day, eight people stood in the dock with Jimmy Lai; their terms are an indispensable part of this file (per Reuters and AP reporting of February 9, 2026): Apple Daily editor-in-chief Ryan Law, 10 years; executive editor-in-chief Lam Man-chung, 10 years; English-edition managing editor Fung Wai-kong, 10 years; associate publisher Chan Pui-man, 7 years; editorial writer Yeung Ching-kei (Li Ping), 7 years and 3 months; Next Digital CEO Cheung Kim-hung, 6 years and 9 months; and activists Andy Li and Chan Tsz-wah, 6 years and 3 months and 7 years and 3 months respectively. All six journalists had pleaded guilty in 2022 to conspiracy to collude with foreign forces; Cheung, Chan and Yeung among them later testified for the prosecution against Lai, and the judges said their evidence contributed 'significantly' to his conviction and reduced their sentences accordingly. The three who did not turn prosecution witness — Law, Lam and Fung — each received 10 years, the heaviest terms in the case after Lai himself. How precisely guilty pleas and testimony mapped onto sentence length is written plainly in the judgment and the outcomes.
Three defendant companies — Apple Daily Ltd., Apple Daily Printing Ltd. and AD Internet Ltd. — were convicted and fined in the same case. A newspaper criminally convicted as a whole — founder, editor-in-chief, editorial writer, printing arm and website — has no precedent in Hong Kong's judicial history. Outside the court on sentencing day, dozens of former staff and citizens queued from before dawn for gallery seats; one former employee told media that all they could still do was 'be present to witness.' That sentence belongs in the file too: a newspaper's last editorial meeting reconvened in a public gallery.

12. 2019: The Year He Took to the Streets
Lai's 2019 actions deserve their own section, because every later assembly case originates in that year. During the anti-extradition movement he joined marches repeatedly as an ordinary citizen, and as a newspaper owner met foreign officials: in July he went to Washington and met Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to discuss Hong Kong — Beijing's foreign ministry denounced it at the time as 'leaning on foreigners.' On August 18 the Civil Human Rights Front held its flowing rally at Victoria Park, which organizers put at 1.7 million participants; Lai was in the crowd — the case that later drew him 12 months. He was present at the August 31 and October 1 marches as well, walking with democracy-camp elders including Martin Lee. All year, his Apple Daily reported from an anti-extradition stance and carried advertisements supporting protesters. After the NSL, the prosecution's narrative ran backward from 2019: the marches renamed unauthorized assemblies, the meetings with foreign officials renamed the starting point of collusion, the paper's editorial stance renamed evidence of conspiracy. The whole trajectory of a man's public life, re-labeled segment by segment as criminal facts.
13. Next Digital's End and the Aftermath for Hong Kong's Press
Beyond Lai's personal cases, the corporate group he founded was liquidated in parallel. In September 2021 Financial Secretary Paul Chan appointed an inspector into Next Digital's affairs and petitioned the High Court to wind the company up on the ground that its operation harmed the public interest; the court later ordered the winding-up, the shares stayed suspended, and in January 2023 the Hong Kong Stock Exchange delisted the company. After Apple Daily closed, hundreds of journalists lost their work; some changed careers, some left Hong Kong, and the paper's charitable fund, printing plant and Tseung Kwan O headquarters site entered liquidation in turn. Collapsing in the same period were Stand News (closed immediately after its executives' arrests in December 2021) and Citizen News (January 2022). In Reporters Without Borders' World Press Freedom Index, Hong Kong fell from 18th in 2002 to 135th in 2024. These facts stand on this page not as general press-freedom commentary but as the case's complete consequence chain: one man's conviction, accompanied by a listed company's liquidation, a daily newspaper's disappearance, and the reordering of a city's news ecology.
14. Mitigation, International Legal Action and the Aftermath
At the January 2026 mitigation hearing, senior counsel Robert Pang's submissions for Lai cited his age, his diabetes, hypertension and heart problems, more than five years on remand spent mostly in solitary confinement, and presented letters from family and friends; the prosecution stressed the scale of the case and his 'mastermind' role and sought a heavy, deterrent term. In their February 9 sentencing remarks the judges confirmed they had weighed his age and health but held the offenses grave and the sentence necessarily deterrent. After sentencing, his international legal team — led by London KC Caoilfhionn Gallagher — said it would continue petitions to UN bodies; that team had over the years filed submissions with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and engaged several special rapporteurs. His family said they would keep campaigning for his release, or for departure on humanitarian grounds for medical care. What any of this can change in the foreseeable future, no one will predict; but together with the judgment, these actions form the case's complete 2026 record: the court's conclusion has fallen, and the proceedings outside the court continue.
Our Take
The full chain of Jimmy Lai's case is laid out here: assembly prosecutions sentenced him one by one; a lease-fraud case then revoked his bail and achieved long-term custody; frozen assets starved the newspaper to death; and finally a 156-day trial counted the paper's editorial line and his ordinary contacts with foreign officials together as 'conspiracy to collude.' Even a bench of government-designated judges acknowledged his prolonged solitary confinement, yet imposed the NSL's heaviest sentence, 20 years — while the fraud conviction that started the entire custody machine was held, three years later, to be legally unsustainable. A rule-of-law reputation built over decades was dismantled piece by piece, exactly like this.
