1. From Lawyer and Public Speaker to Citizen Journalist
Chen Qiushi was born on September 19, 1985, in Daxing'anling Prefecture, Heilongjiang, and graduated from Heilongjiang University's law school in 2007. He worked in film, television, and media in Beijing and sang in bars on the side. In 2014 he was runner-up on Beijing TV's reality show "I Am a Speaker," which brought him public attention. In 2015 he joined Beijing's Longan Law Firm, practicing intellectual property, labor law, and dispute resolution. Lawyer, speaker, and video blogger in one, he became, after 2019, one of the few people on Chinese social media willing to appear on camera, under his real name, to talk about public events. That background matters: he was neither a professional journalist nor a member of any dissident organization. His visibility came from open, on-camera, signed speech — precisely what the authorities' later handling of him (no trial, no conviction, only disappearance) was designed to erase.
2. Reporting on Hong Kong in 2019 and the First Silencing
In August 2019, during Hong Kong's anti-extradition protests, Chen traveled to Hong Kong and reported on the ground. In Weibo broadcasts he said most protesters were peaceful, not the "rioters" of the official narrative — a message that drew an enormous audience. Mainland authorities cut the trip short and recalled him to Beijing; afterward he was summoned repeatedly for questioning by different departments. All his domestic social media accounts were then deleted: his 740,000 Weibo followers and every video vanished. In October 2019 he resurfaced on YouTube, saying that Article 35 of the Constitution protects free speech and that he would keep speaking; his YouTube channel later passed 430,000 subscribers and his Twitter account 240,000 followers — both platforms blocked in mainland China and reachable only by VPN. The episode was a rehearsal for Wuhan: the authorities had mapped his reach, and he knew the price of speaking again.
3. Entering Wuhan on January 24, 2020
Wuhan was locked down on January 23, 2020. The next day — Lunar New Year's Eve — Chen arrived by high-speed train, one step behind the lockdown order and ahead of most outside journalists. For nearly two weeks he crossed the city on a borrowed electric scooter: the streets around the Huanan market, fever clinics at Hankou Hospital and Wuhan Central Hospital, patients queuing for hours, corridors with no beds, a funeral home, supply depots, and the Huoshenshan Hospital construction site, which he described as a battlefield hospital not fit to house infectious-disease patients. Taxi drivers told him they had heard of the mystery pneumonia as early as mid-December 2019. He tried to visit a family of four all confirmed infected, whose 84-year-old mother had just died and whose son had waited days for a bed, but the compound was sealed. Posted to Twitter and YouTube, his videos became one of the main firsthand sources through which the outside world learned conditions in Wuhan, corroborating the records of fellow citizen journalists Fang Bin and Li Zehua.
In a January 29 video, Chen said the virus was in front of him and China's entire law-enforcement system behind him, but that he would keep reporting from Wuhan as long as he lived — adding, in a line that spread widely, that a man unafraid of death had no reason to fear the Communist Party. On January 30 he said his WeChat presence was being blocked and that sharing his videos could get accounts banned. His posting slowed in early February. On February 6, after visiting a makeshift Fangcang shelter hospital, he lost contact. That evening a friend took over his Twitter account, as pre-arranged, to announce it; on February 7 his mother appeared in a video saying her son had been taken into forced quarantine and his whereabouts were unknown, and asking the public for help. Wuhan and Qingdao police told CNN at the time they had no information about him.
4. Six Hundred Days of "Quarantine": A Disappearance Without Charges
The explanation later relayed through his family was that Chen had been "quarantined" for visiting sensitive areas. But this quarantine lasted over a year, with no family visits, no lawyer, and no outside contact — a duration and manner unrelated to epidemic control. Zhang Zhan, who reported from Wuhan in the same period, was sentenced to four years for "picking quarrels" in December 2020. Chen was never publicly charged: no accusation, no verdict. That lawlessness is precisely what makes such cases hardest to remedy — with no case there is no defense, and with no sentence there is no release date. According to his friend, MMA coach Xu Xiaodong, who campaigned publicly for nearly twenty months, Chen was released in March 2021 and placed under house arrest at his parents' home in Qingdao, Shandong. His family was at one point ordered to cut all contact with Xu, even on WeChat.
5. The September 2021 Reappearance and the Silence Since
On September 30, 2021, after more than 600 days out of contact, Chen appeared briefly in Xu Xiaodong's livestream and posted an open letter on Twitter and YouTube. He said he had been through much in the past year and eight months, some of which he could discuss and some he could not, and that boxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu had helped him through depression. He gave no account of how he was taken, where he was held, or the terms of his release — a silence that, from a trained lawyer and practiced speaker, is itself information. In 2022 he took part in a boxing match, leaving a public visual record. He has never resumed public reporting of any kind; his domestic accounts were never restored and his overseas accounts have largely gone quiet. Verifiable public information ends there: by public accounts he lives in Qingdao with his movements and speech restricted, and no reliable reporting since 2023 updates his condition; this page does not speculate. His Twitter and YouTube accounts remain online, and his Wuhan videos can still be watched — the part of this history that could not be fully deleted.
6. What His Family and Friends Went Through
After Chen vanished, the first to speak out was his mother, who on February 7, 2020, posted a video appeal saying her son had been forcibly quarantined and the family did not know where he was. For nearly twenty months the family had no legal document and nowhere to appeal: no detention notice, no place of custody, and police answers of "no information." Xu Xiaodong ran Chen's Twitter account and campaigned for nearly twenty months, reporting that the family had been ordered to cut all contact with him. Reporters Without Borders and the Committee to Protect Journalists repeatedly listed Chen among citizen journalists detained for COVID reporting and called on Beijing to allow outside contact; there was no response. Asked about Chen on American television in 2020, China's ambassador to the United States, Cui Tiankai, said he had never heard of him. The method pressured the family along with the man: with no paperwork, they could hire no lawyer and start no legal process.
7. International Response
After Chen's disappearance, the U.S. State Department, lawmakers in several countries, and rights groups publicly called for his release, and tens of thousands signed petitions asking Washington to intervene. CNN counted at least 47 citizen journalists arrested or detained for reporting on the Wuhan outbreak; Chen Qiushi, Fang Bin, Li Zehua, and Zhang Zhan were the best known. Li was released in April 2020, Fang Bin vanished for years before a sentence emerged, and Zhang served four years. Chen is the only one of the four who never entered any public judicial process at all. Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders cite his case in successive reports as proof that Chinese authorities can make a citizen journalist disappear for over 600 days under the name of "quarantine," without a trial. The precedent reaches beyond him: it priced the act of picking up a phone to record a scene for everyone who might follow.
8. Thirteen Days in Wuhan: A Day-by-Day Record
Laying out Chen's Wuhan days one by one shows both what he did and how quickly the response came. January 24 (New Year's Eve): arrived in Wuhan and posted his first video explaining why he had come. January 25–28: moved through fever clinics and wards at multiple hospitals, filming queues, makeshift beds, and medical staff in protective gear, and interviewing patients' families; shortages of supplies and testing capacity, he reported, were the most striking facts on the ground. January 29: posted the video saying the virus was in front of him and the law-enforcement system behind him, and began relaying footage shot by other residents. January 30: said his WeChat channels were blocked and that sharing his videos risked account bans; tried and failed to visit the infected family. February 1–2: relayed videos by residents including Fang Bin — crowds scrambling for a herbal remedy, and plainclothes officers calling at night in the name of epidemic control. February 5: his social media updates stopped. February 6: lost contact after visiting a Fangcang shelter hospital. In ten days a citizen journalist's public record went from daily updates to total blank; the date that blank began is the date this archive fixes in place.
9. A Case With No Case
Viewed as a legal file, the most striking fact of the Chen Qiushi case is the absence of documents: no public detention warrant, no arrest warrant, no indictment, no verdict, no release paper. His family never received a single official document stating which agency held him, under what authority, or where. The contrast with Zhang Zhan's case makes the absence clearer: Zhang had a charge (picking quarrels), a court (Shanghai Pudong New Area Court), and a sentence (four years), and her lawyers at least knew whom to petition. Chen's family could not even find an addressee for an appeal. When he returned to his parents' home in Qingdao in March 2021, there was likewise no public legal document explaining where he had been for twenty months, on what basis he had been held, or on what basis released. Reporters Without Borders classifies such handling as arbitrary detention in the name of public health. By archival standards, this section's conclusion is: the "judicial record" column of this case remains blank to this day — and the blank is itself the record.
10. The Video Archive He Left Behind
Chen's deleted domestic accounts cannot be restored, but the dozens of videos he posted during his thirteen days in Wuhan survive — on Twitter, on YouTube, and in countless re-uploads — as a ground-level visual archive of the outbreak's first phase: extra beds in hospital corridors, funeral-home vehicles, empty streets, crowds unable to buy medicine, shopkeepers who stayed open. The footage has been cited repeatedly in documentaries, scholarship, and news retrospectives. His open letter, his livestream reappearance, and images of his 2022 boxing match form the archive's second half: a man whose trade was speaking had his accounts erased, was taken away for over 600 days, and returned no longer speaking. That is the point of an archive — deleting an account does not delete the backups, and silencing a man does not unsay what he has already said.
11. The Other Wuhan Reporters: Fang Bin, Li Zehua, Zhang Zhan
Chen Qiushi was not alone. Placing the fates of the four citizen journalists side by side shows the collective outcome for Wuhan's independent reporters in early 2020. Fang Bin, a Wuhan clothing businessman, became known on February 1, 2020, for filming bodies being carried out of Hankou Hospital; he was taken from his home on February 9 and vanished for over three years. According to rights organizations and media reports, he was secretly sentenced to three years and released on April 30, 2023, remaining under surveillance. Li Zehua, a former state TV host who quit to continue Chen's reporting in Wuhan, livestreamed police knocking at his door on February 26 and disappeared; in late April he posted a video saying he had been through isolation and investigation and been released, and he then faded from view. Zhang Zhan, a trained lawyer, reached Wuhan in February 2020, was seized on May 14 and taken to Shanghai, and on December 28, 2020, was sentenced by the Pudong New Area Court to four years for "picking quarrels"; she protested with long hunger strikes that wrecked her health, was released on May 13, 2024, still under surveillance, and was detained again in August 2024 for supporting another detainee. Four people, four methods: isolation and exile (Li), secret sentencing (Fang), public sentencing (Zhang), and nameless disappearance (Chen). The forms differ; the result is the same — Wuhan's citizen recorders were eliminated as a group in the spring of 2020.
12. After 2021: Checking the Public Trace Year by Year
As an archive requires, Chen Qiushi's public trace after 2021 is recorded year by year. 2021: returned to his parents' home in Qingdao in March (per Xu Xiaodong); appeared in Xu's livestream on September 30 and posted an open letter saying that of the past year and eight months, some things could be told and some could not, describing depression and recovery through combat sports. 2022: took part in a boxing match, leaving public photos and video — his last verifiable public appearance on record. 2023: no public reporting, no findable account activity. 2024: no public reporting. 2025: no public reporting. 2026: as of this page's verification in October, still no reliable news of him. The meaning of this "no record" should be stated: he did not retire and did not emigrate. A speaker who once had hundreds of thousands of viewers was muted wholesale in his late thirties. This site states his status only in sourced terms — by public accounts he lives in Qingdao with restricted movement — and does not speculate beyond what can be verified.
Against this yearly blank stands what Xu Xiaodong disclosed about the Qingdao house arrest: when Chen returned to his parents' home in March 2021, he was barred from outside contact, and even his family was ordered to cut ties with Xu; after he resurfaced, he was never permitted to discuss those twenty months. A man can be detained without a verdict and sent home without a document — entry and exit both leave no trace. That is this case's final lesson for any archive.
13. The Proxy Account and a Mother's Appeal: How Word Got Out
During Chen's disappearance, the outside world learned of it through a pre-arranged chain of communication that itself belongs in the archive. Before leaving for Wuhan he had agreed with a friend: if he vanished, the friend would take over his Twitter account and say so. On the evening of February 6, 2020, the friend posted as arranged: Chen had gone to a Fangcang hospital and lost contact, his phone unanswered. On February 7 his mother recorded a video appeal: her son had been taken for "forced quarantine," the family could learn nothing anywhere, and she asked netizens to spread the word. The video was shared massively and became the starting point of international coverage. For months the friend kept posting updates on the account, including the order that the family cut contact with him, and said publicly that Chen had done nothing wrong as a citizen reporter — he had only recorded what he saw and heard. The U.S. State Department's spokesperson called on Beijing to disclose Chen's whereabouts and let him speak freely. This chain is recorded because it shows how, when a person is muted wholesale, an archive survives only because family and friends rescue it by the most basic means — one video, a string of posts.
14. After This Case: What Became of Citizen Journalism
The aftermath of Chen's case can be located with two public datasets. The Committee to Protect Journalists' 2020 prison census counted at least 47 journalists jailed in China that year, among the highest totals in the world; in Reporters Without Borders' World Press Freedom Index, China has sat at 175th or below among 180 countries and territories through the 2020s. After Wuhan, the citizen journalist who travels independently to the scene of a breaking event effectively disappeared from China: during the 2022 Shanghai lockdown, the White Paper protests, and the 2023 Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei floods, on-the-ground records came as fragments from ordinary residents, and no figure emerged doing what Chen did — named, on camera, reporting continuously. It is not that no one wishes to; the price has been posted: four years for Zhang Zhan, three for Fang Bin, six hundred nameless days for Chen Qiushi. In his October 2019 video, Chen said he kept speaking because free speech is a constitutional right. Six years on, that sentence survives with his Wuhan videos on servers outside the firewall; inside it, a search for his name returns what deletion left behind.
15. Institutional Absence: The Silence of His Firm, the Bar, and the Justice Bureau
One column of Chen Qiushi's file is empty: institutional statements. Longan Law Firm, where he practiced, issued no public statement after he disappeared. Neither the Beijing Lawyers Association nor the Beijing Justice Bureau ever commented on a practicing lawyer being held in "forced quarantine" for over 600 days. By the profession's own logic, when a lawyer vanishes after reporting on a public event, the bar association should at minimum inquire after him and defend his right to practice; none of this ever happened. The status of his practicing certificate after his disappearance — cancelled, revoked, or retained — appears in no public record; verified to October 2026, it cannot be found, and this page marks it as missing rather than guessing. Read beside his experience, the blank column yields a clear conclusion: in this system a law license is never a guarantee of rights but a rope that can be pulled back at any time, and when the rope tightens, the institutions holding it do not speak for the person it binds. Chen entered public life as a lawyer, disappeared as a journalist, and came home as a silent man — and between those three identities, no institution ever left a single sentence on his behalf.
Our Take
There is not even a verdict to find in Chen Qiushi's case, and that is exactly why it must be recorded. If the regime believed he had broken the law, it could have charged him, tried him, and let the world test its evidence. It did not. It used epidemic control as the name for secret detention — 600-plus days with no charge, no location, no term — and never even had to deny him a defense, because there was no case. A show trial at least costs something; disappearance costs nothing. When "quarantine" can be extended indefinitely, any emergency power becomes a ready tool.
